Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
