The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show nears, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
